Portrait of a Woman 1910 - Gustav Klimt was an Austrian symbolist painter and one of the most prominent members of the Vienna Secession movement. Klimt is noted for his paintings, murals, sketches, and other objets d'art. He began his career painting realistic portraits and landscapes in a traditional academic style. However, he gradually developed a more romantic and symbolism style. His work is characterized by intricate patterns, gold leaf motifs, and erotic imagery. Amongst his figurative works, which include allegories and portraits, he painted landscapes. Among the artists of the Vienna Secession, Klimt was the most influenced by Japanese art and its methods. Japan had recently opened its shores to foreigners after centuries of isolationism, and the young artist was fascinated by the country's art, culture, and aesthetics. He often incorporated Japanese elements into his own work, such as asymmetrical compositions and flat areas of color. Klimt's experimental approach to painting earned him both acclaim and criticism from his contemporaries. However, his distinctive style continues to influence artists today.
